Moria,

Most likely the coupons were printed with a hacked bar code so as to remove a large amount from the total. However, if Ana hadn't purchased the gift cards, not only would she have gotten away with relatively little bounty, but the total would have been zero or negative and easily caught. Because there was already $400 on the total before the coupons were scanned, the fake coupons could deduct large amounts of money and have a reasonable total appear at the end.

Cheers,
Eric

I guess this is someone who lives in the US? I didn't understand the setup and I'm not too sure what Ana did.

The UK doesn't appear to have these problems. Probably soon will unless this whole thing is also a scan :)

Nicely set out and well written.

Cheers, Moira!
